You do not need to cross the border for a proper tortilla in Hollywood, but you might want to cross the street to find it. This is a neighborhood where a strip-mall cantina with hand-pressed tortillas sits a few blocks from a beachfront spot pouring frozen margaritas, and both are worth your time.

From late-night snacks at Social Room to the churrasco at the Chimney House, the range here runs from funky dives to polished plates, with the fajitas at El Coyote proof that unpretentious can still blow your mind. So, pull up a stool, order something with salsa, and let this list guide your next craving.

Sr Miche is the kind of place that makes you wonder why you ever bothered with the fussier spots. I wandered in on a weekday, and the quick, friendly service had me at the door. The tacos were delicious, exactly what you want after a long day, and the margaritas did their job without any drama. But the real star was the homemade hot sauces, each one with its own sneaky personality. I found myself going back for a second round, then a third, just to test which one I liked best. It's a great lunch or dinner spot, and I'm already planning my return. Some places earn a repeat visit, and this one definitely did.

Dos Pecados snuck up on me. I came for the food, which was delicious, but I stayed for the beautiful back patio. The friendly, attentive service made the whole meal feel easy, like you were a regular even on your first visit. There's a family-friendly vibe here that's rare, and I watched a couple of kids get their plates sorted out with a smile. When a small mix-up happened with our order, the staff fixed it fast, no fuss. That kind of problem-solving wins my heart. It's the kind of place where you linger after the bill arrives, chatting and soaking up the atmosphere. I left full and happy, which is all I ever really ask.

The Mermaid Queen has one thing most Hollywood spots can't touch: beachfront ocean views that stretch forever. I sat on the patio, and the salty breeze made the fresh, authentic Mexican dishes taste even better. The service was friendly and attentive without hovering, which I appreciated as I watched the waves. The vibe is lively yet relaxed, like a beach party that refuses to get too rowdy. I ordered a taco and a cold drink, and everything hit just right. It's not the cheapest option, but the setting makes it feel worth it. I'll be back, probably with friends who need a reminder that sometimes the best dining view comes with sand in your shoes.

Lona Cocina Tequileria is a tropical dream with a solid pour. I stopped in for brunch, and the flavors came through loud and clear. The service sings here, literally, in the way the staff hums along to the music while they take your order. Strong drinks are the norm, and they don't skimp on the tequila. The atmosphere is family-friendly and relaxed, which is a rare combo when the beach is right there. I sat with a friend, and we both agreed we'd be back. The only issue was leaving. I could have stayed all afternoon, sipping something frozen and watching the palm trees sway. Worth another visit, no question.

Unpretentious strip mall spot
Great value for the price

El Coyote Mexican Restaurant is the unpretentious strip mall spot that proves you don't need fancy décor to nail the basics. The incredibly friendly waitstaff made me feel like I'd walked into a neighborhood hangout, even though I was just passing through. The fajitas are a must-order, and they arrived sizzling, with that glorious steam that promises flavor. I ate every bite and scraped the plate clean. The prices are reasonable, and the value for the quality is hard to beat. I've already told two people about it. If you're looking for a solid, no-nonsense meal, this is it. I'll be returning, probably soon, because those fajitas are calling my name.

Chapultepec Mexican Bar & Restaurant feels like a family party that you're lucky enough to crash. The homemade-tasting guacamole was the first sign, and it didn't disappoint, fresh and bright with just the right kick. The lively, colorful atmosphere extends outdoors, where the energy is contagious. Live music added to the buzz, and the staff were attentive and friendly, even when the place got busy. This is authentic family-style cooking, and you can tell the matriarch runs the kitchen with love. It's a great spot for families or groups, especially if you want to share plates and stories. I left with a full stomach and a happy heart. Bring friends, bring appetite.

Churrasco steak simply outstanding

Silky flan, quiet confidence

The Chimney House - Grill & Cafe surprised me in the best way. The churrasco steak is simply outstanding, cooked to a perfect medium-rare with a char that made me close my eyes. The seafood soup turned out to be a discovery, a warm, briny bowl that felt like a hug. Then came the silky flan, quiet and confident, the kind of dessert that doesn't need drama. The service was warm and confident throughout, guiding us without rushing. I also tried the Peruvian ceviche, and it hits perfectly, bright and citrusy. This place has a quiet charm that sneaks up on you. I'm already thinking about the steak again. That's the sign of a winner.

Lively outdoor hangout spot
Great music and drinks
Dog-friendly entertainment
Solid tacos with QR ordering
Scenic waterfront, partially blocked

The Wharf Fort Lauderdale is a lively outdoor hangout, though the name tips you off that it's not exactly Hollywood. Still, the music was great, and the drinks flowed. I ordered tacos via QR code, which felt modern, and they were solid, not mind-blowing but reliable. The scenic waterfront is partially blocked by some structures, so you catch glimpses rather than full views. The real draw is the energy and the dogs. Plenty of pups were roaming around, which made me smile. It's a chill spot to meet friends, play a game, and watch the sunset over the water. Just don't come expecting gourmet. Come for the vibe.

Highlights
Fresh, warm takeout packaging
Impressive to-go box quality
Poor burger doneness control
Unaware and unhelpful staff
Waste of money and time

Chili's Grill & Bar, in this particular visit, was a disappointment wrapped in nice packaging. The takeout boxes were fresh and warm, and the to-go quality was actually impressive, I'll give them that. But the burger had poor doneness control, arriving more well-done than I asked for, which ruined the experience. The staff seemed unaware and unhelpful, and when I tried to flag someone down, I got a shrug. It felt like a waste of money and time, which is a shame because the potential is there. I won't be rushing back. Sometimes you gamble on a chain and lose. This was one of those days.

Poke bowl with rice noodles
Tipping included, service worth it

Playa Beach Bar & Grill is where you go when you want a drink with sand between your toes. The oceanfront setting is unbeatable, and the frozen cocktails are as cold as they are strong. The smoky salsa that comes with the chips had me asking for a second bowl. I tried the poke bowl with rice noodles, which was a fun twist, fresh and colorful. The service was friendly, and since the tip is included, you don't have to do math after a few margaritas. The poolside views add a nice touch, even if you're just watching others swim. It's a relaxed spot that delivers. I'd come back for the salsa alone.

JOEY Aventura might not be a Mexican joint, but I wandered in anyway, and I'm glad I did. The dinner was fantastic, and the standout service came from Luis and Julianna, who anticipated our needs before we even asked. The udon truffle was rich and flavorful, a bowl of comfort with a fancy twist. The steak frites were cooked perfectly, the kind of dish that makes you slow down and savor each bite. Everything tasted fresh, and the whole experience felt polished. I left thinking about when I could return, and that's the best compliment I can give. It's worth the trip, even if you have to cross city lines.

Social Room Hollywood is the kind of place you stumble into when you don't want the night to end. I showed up late, and the kitchen was still serving snacks until midnight, which is a beautiful thing. The fun outdoor games and TVs kept us entertained, and the cozy seating areas made it easy to sink into a conversation. The friendly bartender, Louie, remembered my drink order after one round, which is a talent. It's a chill hangout with friends, not a fancy dinner spot, but that's exactly what I needed. The vibe is relaxed, and the company was good. I'll be back for the games and the late-night joy.
